David Epstein, J.D.
Visiting Professor of Law

David Epstein brings to Wilmington University Farnan School of Law a career shaped by teaching, academic leadership, legal practice, and scholarship. He has served as a partner at King & Spalding, as dean of both a public law school and a private law school, and as a tenured faculty member at seven law schools. He has also been a visiting professor at fourteen other law schools. Across those appointments, his commitment to students has been recognized with teaching awards at seven institutions.

His scholarship focuses especially on commercial law. For more than fifty years, West Publishing Company has published casebooks and student guides that he authored or co-authored. In the classroom, he has taught Bankruptcy, Business Associations, Core Commercial Law, Contracts, Sales, and Secured Transactions. His teaching has also extended beyond the traditional law school curriculum, including an undergraduate course titled Baseball, Body Parts and Rosa Parks. Always willing to help where needed, he once stepped in to teach a month of Torts at Emory after the course's professor was injured in a car-racing accident.

Epstein's professional path reflects an enduring enthusiasm for legal education and the students he has taught at institutions across the country. The breadth of his courses reflects the range of perspectives he brings from practice, administration, scholarship, and decades in the classroom. He values the opportunities that practice, administration, writing, and teaching have given him to approach the law from different perspectives. Outside his professional work, he especially enjoys living in Charlottesville, where he is close enough to spend time with and, as he puts it, spoil his grandchildren.
