Michael Hornzell, J.D.
Assistant Professor of Law

Professor Michael Hornzell is a founding faculty member of the Wilmington University Farnan School of Law, where his teaching and service reflect a strong commitment to preparing students for the modern legal profession. His teaching interests include Artificial Intelligence and the Law, Property Law, Evidence, and Legal Writing. Beyond the classroom, he supports student development as faculty advisor to both the Student Bar Association and the Farnan School of Law chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

Professor Hornzell's research and legal scholarship are guided by a central conviction: the law should be examined not only as a system of rules, but also as a means of improving the lives of all members of society. His current work explores how the emerging technology of artificial intelligence may shape the legal profession's ability to fulfill that mission. His recent scholarship includes articles published in the University of Baltimore Law Review and accepted for publication in the Connecticut Law Review. Together, his teaching and scholarship connect foundational legal subjects with questions about how new technologies may influence legal practice, professional responsibility, and access to justice.

Before entering academia, Professor Hornzell served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Joshua D. Wolson of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the Honorable D. Michael Fisher of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. These experiences provided an early foundation for his work as a teacher and scholar, particularly his interest in careful legal analysis, effective written advocacy, and the role of courts in shaping the law. Professor Hornzell earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Harvard Law School and his Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. As an undergraduate, he was an All-American wrestler in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association.
