Simulation Courses

Simulation courses at WilmU Law provide students with structured learning opportunities that mimic real-world situations, allowing students to practice skills, make decisions, and face the consequences of those decisions within a controlled setting. By immersing students in authentic legal scenarios, they gain hands-on experience, foster a deeper understanding of legal theories and enhance their preparedness for real-world challenges.

Types of Simulation Courses

Simulation courses are currently under development.  Anticipated courses include:

Trial Advocacy
Students complete exercises which simulate the trial process from beginning to end. Trial components include: Opening and Closing Statements, Direct and Cross Examination of Witnesses, and Introduction of Evidence into the record

Mediation
Using a combination of lecture, discussion, demonstration, and simulation, this course will offer students an opportunity to gain knowledge of the theory and practice of mediation. The course will enable students to explore how mediation is actually conducted and to apply judgement as to when mediation may or may not be appropriate in individual cases

Litigation Process
This is an introduction to the roles which lawyers play in litigation. Students will simulate the stages of a lawsuit, from initial client interview through pleading, discovery, and pretrial into trial.

Discovery Process
Topics will include the scope of discovery, application of ethical rules to discovery, forms of discovery (e.g. interrogatories, requests for production of documents, depositions), electronic discovery, best practices, discovery sanctions, and proposals for reform.

Appellate Advocacy
Students will be presented with a case adjudicated at the trial court which they will present on appeal. The appellate process will be discussed and students will be required to research all applicable law and appellate procedures, write an appellate brief and present an oral argument.
